Car Pool Log: 2006 06-02

Silver BMW with black leather interior. A golf ball on top of pens in the divide, papers in the backseat with a leather jacket. Driver was drinking out of a Peaberry’s Coffee and Tea 12 ounce cup (hex! hex! - *vampire hiss*). Second Passenger was pretty chatty. They spoke of the weather, the difference between taking buses back and forth versus BART. Second Passenger relayed the history of Bay Area carpooling. She used to take car pool by the Grand Lake Theater. AC Transit used to call the police on them, angry that they were taking away passengers. They made that area a red zone so when cars picked people up they would be ticketed. They spoke of how taking car pool from San Francisco to Oakland was different. Second Passenger said that started after the earthquake when BART was out of commission and the buses back to the East Bay were so packed. AM radio 810.

Car Pool Log: 2006 06-01

Rode in with Ashley again this Thursday morning. Picked up Second Passenger, female, pleasant. Nothing much to note in this ride. Ashley began the ride on her cell phone, telling her housemate how she forgot to pay rent. The fog this morning was thick and eerie. Seeing the gray on the otherside of Treasure Island from one end of the tunnel looked like burning rubber smoke, as though there were an explosion or an accident. Rolling over the eastern span of the bridge was like something out of a fantasy or sci-fi flick, as though we were driving into a kind of unknown, into the Nothing.

Car Pool Log: 2006 05-31

Rode in with Ashley this morning. Second Passenger was a very tall man, had difficulty getting into the back seat. Driving onto 24 Ashley and I could both feel his weight pulling and slowing the car down. I could hear him rustling around with his newspaper; I assume he was having difficulty getting comfortable. After dropping him off Ashley and I drove down Howard Street. I remembered a time as a kid, having spent the night at the Boston Museum of Science and eating breakfast in their cafeteria, on how I always wanted to live and work in a city. I remember being very impressed with how clean and beautiful the buildings looked.

Car Pool Log: 2006 05-30

Black Toyota Tacoma. In the bed of the truck, covered with a shell, was a baby seat. Because we were riding in a pick-up it was just the two of us going over the bridge. Driver was chatty. She asked me if I’d ridden with her before, I told her I had not. She spoke of the weather, the traffic, how I get home, what kind of car was in front of us, the beauty of a charter bus, a new 45 mph sign was orange instead of white. I had suggested that maybe it was put up temporarily, for construction. She works in the Sunset. Listerine mint strips, listened to KTO am radio. Station mentioned an accident on the western side of TI. It took me a while to realize that TI stood for Treasure Island. I don’t understand traffic lexicon very well, I guess.
