Car Pool Log: 2006 07-07

Gray Honda sedan, mottled fibrous interiors. In the backseat: a straw mat covering a wooden handled umbrella, a black plastic handled umbrella underneath the Driver’s seat. Behind the passenger’s side was a yellow plastic container holding wires or cables of some kind, perhaps jumper cables. Underneath a new looking car stereo, in small cubby, a tube of chapstick.

Driving over the bridge, past Treasure Island, a van tried to merge into the right lane and into a black BMW. The BMW swerved to avoid collision in a dramatic, commercial-quality maneuver. Driver made an audible noise of surprise similar to a grunt or a clucking.

On the radio, NPR perhaps; a news report on how Craigslist is being brought up on charges for not complying with the Fair Housing Act. A Human rights interest group claims that Craigslist needs to follow the guidelines similar to paper publications when it comes to discrimination in their housing classifieds. Large dot com companies are in support of Craigslist in not having to regulate (or censor, depending on how you approach) every posting. One commentator suggested that since Craigslist is on the internet and therefore an informational conduit (similar to the telephone system) and not in the publishing field then it doesn’t need to comply with the act.

Black sedan with tan colored leather interiors. Driver recognized me from a previous drive (see CPL: 2006 06-19). Driver was wearing a blue shirt; his daughter was once again sitting in the backseat. CD’s in the cubby of the passenger side door: some children’s albums, a Mercury Masters Series disc, a subscription card for Real Simple magazine. The girl in the back, approximately four years old, was audibly drinking a smoothie out of a cup. When she was done she began humming and singing into the cup. Sarah and No-Name on the radio talking to Tiffany about her past career and her show last night at the Red Devil Lounge.

“Daddy?” the young girl asked.

“Yes, sweetie?”

“I’m cold.”

“We’ll be driving into the sun up ahead soon and that’ll warm you up.”

Driver asked if I was okay about being dropped off at the same location as before. I asked that he consider pulling over closer to the intersection and he agreed.

As we passed through Treasure Island the little girl began singing, on a loop: “Hi-ho, Hi-ho, it’s off to work we go.”

Car Pool Log: 2006 07-05

Dark gray Silverado, four-door pick-up with a steel cabin in the bed. Sat in the front assuming that since the vehicle was a truck we would just drive off but we picked up Second Passenger. Driver had shoulder length brown hair, tough hands, dusty construction pants and boots. In the cubby in-between our seats was a stapler, some pens and pencils. A pale red/pink Mossimo hat. Listened to NPR radio. Driver dropped us off on the eastern end of the San Francisco Bus Terminal. It was dark and I had a difficult time finding the door handle out. We both had a laugh at the situation. He may or may not have had an Australian or New Zealand accent.

Gray Honda with slate-gray leather interiors. In the backseat: a babyseat with matching slate-gray leather, a number of children’s books, a CD called “Christmas Favorites,” a bottle of soap bubbles. In the carseat; a Zip-Lock bag of Cheerios, a black canvas carrying bag with a brand name written in white thread. Driver was reading the Wall Street Journal when I got into the car. Second Passenger stepped in, Driver informed him that he could put the seat back, he had long legs. Listened to Classical 102.1 KDFC.
